11th StopTrik IFF Coming to Lodz: 5. - 7. 11. 2021

It’s a high time for StopTrik IFF to relocate for a weekend to the city of Lodz. This year almost 80 films from the competition programmes, Panorama selection, and chosen accompanying film programmes will be presented at the atmospheric art-house Cinema Bodo.

International Stop Motion Competition showcase the most recent worldwide achievements in the traditional techniques of stop motion animation (puppet film, claymation, object animation, pixilation, cut-out, etc.). Highly successful “top picks” of the festival season - such as Hugo Covarrubias’ BESTIA from Chile or Kim Kang-min’s KKUM from South Korea - will compete for the viewers’ attention along with excellent works of stop motion newcomers such as Raz Merhav’s ONLY WITH YOU from Israel or Shinobu Soejima’s BLINK IN THE DESERT from Japan. In The Borderlands competition, we present experimental shorts that combine stop motion with other animation techniques, and explore further cinematic means of expression. Again, among the contenders one finds such well-recognized names of international animation as Paul Bush (UK) or Paul Wenninger (Austria) as well as new, inspiring voices from Taiwan (Wu Ching-Chiang) or Russia (Natalia Ryss). Non-competitive Panorama programme is a true vertigo through styles and ideas relevant for artistic sensitivities and identities of animation artists. With a great pleasure we notice strong representation of Polish animation made in professional studio conditions (e.g., films by Daria Kopiec, Tomek Ducki) as well as at the art and film schools (e.g., films by Julia Orlik from Lodz or Ambroży Dańko from Warsaw), and eventually in the midst of the Women Strike protests in October 2020 (#sprzeciwpolek).

At StopTrik it is the Audience who decide about the prizes for the best films of the festival. Separate awards are granted by the Lodz Students Jury, this year composed of Martyna Gonciarz, Maciej Kujawski, and Adam Sołtys.

Accompanying film programme comes directly from our great partner festivals: ReAnima (Bergen, Norway) and Animator (Poznań, Poland). These presentations are not reduced to the stop motion techniques, they embrace a wide range of approaches applied in the development of animation filmmaking. Norwegian Animation programme curated by Mr.Kropka outlines 10 shorts made in 2000-2020, and attests to the professionalization of animated film production in Norway. Curators of the Animator Festival summarize the best films presented in Poznań in the last two years. A telling programme’s title “In the Multiverse of Everyday Life” reveals such pearls as Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s SOMETHING TO REMEMBER or Dina Velikovskaya’s TIES. An obligatory screening for anybody who missed Animator in July!

But StopTrik is not only about the screenings, we also open the floor for discussions about the animated film medium. On Saturday (Nov. 6th) we want to focus on the challenges and possibilities of a militant, engaged animation; while on Sunday (Nov. 7th) we will meet the filmmakers during Lodz-edition Trik Show session. Both events will be held at Pop’n’Art Club.
