Stoptrik za kino(m)

During the Lent Festival, the StopTrik International Film Festival is organising three curated thematic selections of stop motion animations, which will be shown in a pop-up cinema in the garden of the Astoria Café, close to one of the city's emblematic landmarks, where the cinema used to be. By creating an improvised cinema, an intervention in space, outdoors, we give place to the cinema. A cinema that does not exist in the city.

The outdoor projections will consist of selected stop-motion animations and animations of other analogue techniques, divided into three curated programmes. The first one will present the best animations from the competition programme of the last edition of the festival, the second one will touch upon animated feminism, and the third one will focus on animated mythologies, themes that have been the red threads of the programme's orientation in the past.

Maribor is home to a rare but all the more valuable event: the StopTrik International Film Festival, one of the few film festivals in the world(!) dedicated exclusively to stop-motion animation. StopTrik has evolved from a niche initiative born in the Pekarna cultural centre in Maribor into a festival of two cities, Maribor and Lodz (Poland), distinguished by a select international competition programme, presenting wide-ranging retrospectives curated by film experts and inviting animation enthusiasts to participate directly through innovatively conceived workshops. The festival combines presentations of historical and contemporary achievements by world-renowned artists committed to handmade, three-dimensional animation techniques and a programme that emphasises the need for insightful cultural reflection on socio-political issues.
