Hungry Ghost / Lačni duh
Guido Devadder, Kaitlin Mcsweeney
2022, Belgium, 6’53”
Rather than following the linear logic of the film strip, the film revives the historical, silent apparatuses, their inherently looping structure providing a compelling common ground for integrating image and sound. The Buddhist figure of the hungry ghost is evoked: a being condemned to endless desire, yet never able to attain satisfaction.

The film draws on the circular principles of 19th-century animation devices such as the phenakistiscope and zoetrope. Its 3D-printed sequential sculptures are animated ‘live’ through the interaction between physical rotation and the camera’s frame rate. The percussion was composed from recordings of mechanical household appliances whose repetitive rhythms enter into dialogue with the rotating sculptures.
